Allegiance Bowl 2011 in Saratoga Springs

Army vs. Navy at this Year’s Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl

Adirondack Trust Allegiance BowlIf you’ve been aching to catch some football, you’ll have your chance this weekend with the Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl in Saratoga Springs. Held on Saturday, September 17, 2011, the Allegiance Bowl is a charity game between members of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL)–a “division I, varsity-level college tackle football where players may not weight more than 172 pounds two days prior to kickoff.”

This year’s game pits the United States Military Academy at West Point (aka Army) against the United States Navel Academy at Annapolis (aka Navy), who last played together in the Allegiance Bowl in 2007, and features a variety of pre- and post-game activities, along with a “Kick-Off” banquet the night before.

At the banquet, attendees will get the chance to meet the coaches and players, and listen to keynote speaker, 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist Jeff Blatnick. Blatnick won his gold medal in wrestling, and along with his teammate was the first American to win in Greco-Roman wrestling history. Cost of the banquet is $25 per person and starts at 6:30pm on Friday, September 16. The West Point Springs Chamber Ensemble and Colgate University’s “Swinging Gares” a cappella group will also be performing at the Allegiance Bowl banquet.

On Saturday is the big game, held at the Saratoga Springs High School football field on West Avenue in Saratoga Springs. The field only holds 4,000 people, so if you’re interested in catching the game, you may want to get your tickets soon. Pre-game activities start at 12:45pm (with kickoff at 1pm) and include a variety of events like a Racing City Chorus, a Sky Diving Exhibition, a Military Aircraft flyover, and the Korean War Vererans Color Guard. During halftime, both the Amsterdam High School Marching Band and the West Point Cadet Silent Drill Team will perform.

Post-game Allegiance Bowl events include the singing of Army and Navy’s Alma Maters and the autographing of the Alliance Bowl banner by the championship team. Two trophies will also be presented. The first goes to the winning team, the other to the Ken Kunken MVP. The Alliance Bowl Committee presents this award “to a deserving participant to honor the inspirational life and extraordinary character of Ken Kunken, a member of the 1970 Cornell University team, who sustained a paralyzing injury during a sprint football game. Last years recipient was Mike Bagnoli from Penn, who won against Navy.

Tickets are on sale now and all proceeds will benefit the Saratoga Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading program.

Children under age five are admitted free. Advance purchased tickets for general admission are just $5; day-of, at the gate tickets are $8. For tickets and more info on the Adirondack Trust Allegiance Bowl, call 518-584-5844, ext. 2441.
