Chocolatey Winter Comfort Food (Video Recipe)

Easy Chocolate Treats That Will Warm You Up

Chocolatey Winter Comfort FoodWinter. Xmas. Valentine’s Day. You find a recurring theme here and it’s called chocolate. As addictive as any drug, chocolate is a most pleasurable confection. And with winter in full swing, what’s better than a cup of hot cocoa, Reese’s peanut butter cups, Hershey’s Kisses…the list is endless.

Dating back to roughly 1100 BC, chocolate and its numerous friends and relatives have been beloved throughout the world. With its origins in the seed of the Theobroma cacao tree found in Mexico, Central and South America, chocolate is believed to have first existed as a beverage called xocolātl, by the Aztecs. Cacao seeds were often used as offerings to the gods, with xocolātl being served as a beverage during sacred ceremonies. In Europe, refined sugar and milk were added to the mix, causing it to be sweetened and fattened and used as more of a treat.

Despite its origins in the Americas, close to two thirds of the world’s chocolate is produced in Western Africa, with half of it being grown in Côte d’Ivoire.

In the latest edition of Get Cooking, Jessica Nicosia enters the world of chocolate with a variety of highly addictive winter comfort food, all centered around chocolate. Pretzel wafer sandwiches, peppermint pretzel sticks, chocolate covered coffee beans, and…wait for it…chocolate covered bananas are just some of the gooey treats that she concocts.

Sit back, enjoy…and be sure to have some chocolate on hand!
