Things to Do on Halloween in Ithaca

Ithaca Halloween Events: Haunted Cocktails, History Tours, Ghost Stories and The Shining

I’d like to clear the air about something. I’m pretty sure in the past I’ve claimed to not like Halloween. I haven’t been completely honest. It’s not the holiday, but rather the dressing up. Other people like dressing up (and I like that other people like that). But there’s more to it than that. People have parties. I like parties. Horror films and scary shows become standard fare on the television. I love to be scared. There’s candy. Everything but the Double Bubble and Mary Jane’s please.

And there’s plenty going on in Ithaca to help celebrate. Without further exposition, I present the 10 best bets for Halloween in Ithaca.

Jack Nicholson in The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980)1. The Shining at Willard Straight Theatre

Stephen King and Jack Nicholson at their finest, in one of my favorite scary movies ever!  No need to make a reservation, there or at The Overlook, just head over to the theater on October 29th or 30th!

2. Hollywood Undead Ball-Castaways

Looking for something to do on the 31st? Head on over to Castaways for Karaoke and some partying with a Hollywood star and starlets you may just recognize! October 31st at 9pm

3. The Haunt Halloween

If you’re looking for something a little bit harder on Halloween, head on over to The Haunt. This year sees the return of crowd favorites Scumdogs of the Universe, Ithaca’s ONLY GWAR cover band, followed by local favorites 12 oz. Muzzle and Don’t Go Into the Woods. October 31st at 8pm.

4. Felicia’s Haunted Cocktails

Another yearly tradition, featuring spooky specials and creepy cocktails. It’s always a treat to see the creative crowd that shows up here for the costume contest! October 29th at 9pm.

The Haunted Tour5. Haunted History Tours

Take a walking tour of downtown Ithaca and get the inside spook! That’s right, all the creepy, nefarious and downright scary history you can handle. Join them for the very special uncensored final tour on October 29th at 11:13pm (must be 21+).

6. Wanna Hear a Scary Story

If the ghost and ghouls in your home are under 21, a lot under 21, you may want to check out the kids program at the Hangar Theatre. Three kids attempt to tell the scariest story they know, and make your little goblins and witches laugh. October 28-30.

7. Halloween Capers

You may want to get the little ones out for a little autumn air and pumpking carving! Take them over to the Cayuga Nature Center and enjoy their Halloween festivities and haunted tree house! October 29th.

8. Spooky Science

There’s no lack of things to do with the kids as the Sciencenter hosts Spooky Science again this year with a look at all the science that makes Halloween possible: spiders, bats, skeletons, ghosts and disembodied screams. October 28th at 6pm.

9. Ithaca Zombie Lurch

Leave the little ones at home for this all adult event across Ithaca. Join the town’s finest ghouls, zombies and ghosts as they lurch down the hill and across town, en masse, to imbibe at some of the spookier locations in town. Lurches leave on the 45 minute mark! So even if you’re not lurching, check out the schedule for this “I wish I had my camera” moment.

10. Halloween Downtown

Join the Downtown Ithaca Alliance for a full weekend of activities ending with the aforementioned zombie lurch. Prior to that, all ages events include trick or treating, costume parades and even a haunted house!

However you choose to celebrate, in costume or not, get on out there and enjoy these great events around Ithaca…if you’re not in the spirit now, you will be this weekend!
