The Cast of “Jersey Shore”: Literary Aspirations

“Jersey Shore” Cast’s Literary Aspirations: A Shore Thing, Rules According to JWOWW, Here’s the Situation

Snooki, JWOWW, The Situation and the gang from The Jersey ShoreMTV’s now infamous “Jersey Shore” franchise gets something of a bad rap. I have never been its biggest fan, as all it has done in my life is to give the world at large a new set of jokes and stereotypes to throw at me when it is discovered that I call fair New Jersey home. That said, I have grown somewhat fond of taking my brain out, watching the gang’s antics, and playing one of my favorite games, entitled ‘Vinny, You’re Just Too Normal to Be Here.’ What swayed me was when the literary possibilities of the show were revealed to me (click here).

Very few things in popular culture get my hair up as much as Twilight, so this beautiful clip filled my heart with almost-affection for the “Jersey Shore” crew. Their absurdity is entertainment enough on its own, but when it’s juxtaposed with anything remotely literary, it’s gold. There must be some kind of mathematical formula.

Twilight is hardly the high-brow material with which the show’s cast want to be associated. Sure, it’s fine for a spot on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, but it’s not the sort of thing to build a career on. These bright young things needed a creative outlet to make their voices heard on those rare occasions when screaming and slinging Jägerbombs just won’t do. That’s where Snooki’s book, [amazonify]1451623747::text::::A Shore Thing[/amazonify] came in. It was panned critically, though it had a brief stint of public popularity. I can’t claim to have read it myself, but if the excerpts are any indication of the rest the novel, for which Ms. Polizzi used a ghost writer, despite not knowing what the term means, I very much doubt any of my meager funds are headed her way. Snooki’s admirable literary attempts inspired her fellow cast members to make their own forays into publishing: [amazonify]1451623747::text::::A Shore Thing,[/amazonify] Jenni ‘JWOWW’ Farley’s [amazonify]006207539X::text::::The Rules According to JWOWW: Shore-Tested Secrets on Landing a Mint Guy, Staying Fresh to Death, and Kicking the Competition to the Curb,[/amazonify] and Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino’s [amazonify]B004P5ONQ8::text::::Here’s the Situation: A Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and Getting in Your GTL on the Jersey Shore[/amazonify] can be purchased in a bundle for $31.58 on Amazon, a rocking-good value to be sure.

You get the idea. It would be difficult, unwise, and poncy beyond all reason to speculate as to what Oscar Wilde’s opinion on the matter would be. It would be scathing and contrary, of course, but that’s as much of an assumption as I’m willing to risk—being haunted by a dandy, even a famous one, seems like an awful prospect. For more laughs and aphorisms, give the rest of the Playbill series a watch.

‘It is only the superficial qualities that last. Man’s deeper nature is soon found out.’
