The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama, Wild West Ranch, Lake George

The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama The Last of the Mohicans Outdoor Drama returns to the Lake George region for its second year on July 29, 2011. If you saw last year’s production, you might notice some changes this time around, including that the company has more than doubled their number of show dates and expanded their cast–their hope, to bring an even stronger and more historically accurate production to theatre-goers.

The story, if you’re not familiar, takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War and revolves around the struggle to gain political control of American land that had been occupied by Native Americans for centuries beforehand. Highlights of this year’s production include authentic costuming and an original adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, Last Of the Mohicans (written in 1826).

But perhaps what makes this production really special is the region’s historical significance during the war. Fort William Henry, served as the northern most outpost for the British during much of the 18th century. Lake George and Lake Champlain were highly sought after by both the British and the French for their strategic roles as waterways during the war. In addition to Fort William Henry, Lake George is also home to other historical sites from the time, such as the Fort George ruins, Bloody Pond and Roger’s Rock.

The show itself is a mix of re-enacting and live performance–horses, battle scenes, cannon shots, Native dance and authentic costumes made from the patterns that have been restored and preserved in museums over the centuries–are all being infused into this year’s performance.
