Local Comedians take the Stage for the Holidays
I got my share of the fun this past week at Laughs on Lark, a monthly comedy showcase held at Elda’s on Lark in Albany. The show marked their 17th, since it was brought to life by Matt Kelly and Jaye McBride on August 11, 2010.
“We wanted to do a show with a more experimental vibe, so we’ll put on anybody we think is funny, interesting, different, or just working hard and hitting a lot of open mics,” says Matt Kelly, who lives in Albany and has been doing stand-up comedy for two years–he was also one of the evening’s performers.
The night consisted of three comedians (Matt Mitchell, Kevin Marshall, and Matt Kelly), Illusionist David Boyd, and two members of the Improv Troupe Mop & Bucket Co.–Peter and John.
Opening the night was Matt Mitchell. Mitchell warmed up the crowd with his laid back and self-deprecating humor, commenting on things like the beard he wears so he doesn’t look like a twelve-year-old.
Kevin Marshall, local blogger, relished it up next with his comedic pondering of real life situations and relationships, including how he finds new partners (clever indeed); his act was bookended with some serious off-color humor.
Headliner Matt Kelly (also co-creator of the event) was the stand-out stand-up comedian of the night, with his original styale and character act. Hey–what’s not to love about a guy with big back thick framed glasses and a slightly bouffant hair-do, who embraces drinking on the job?
Some funny seriousness came from Illusionist David Boyd (think early Will Smith) of the Bing Bamboo Room Burlesque Show, as he performed a series of tricks, including vaporizing a dollar bill (which reappeared shortly following in a piece of fruit) and escaping from a straight jacket–which yes, it really can be done.
Peter Delocis and John Briggs of local improv troupe Mop & Bucket Co., added an additional layer, interspersing the stand-up with skits and the reading of holiday memories from cards that were given out to the audience and collected at the door, managing along the way to bring back those grand memories of (among other things) being “poisoned by mom.”
Jaye McBride hosted the event, adding in a few jokes of her own on dating and the holidays.
Laughs on Lark is held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at Elda’s on Lark, located at the corner of State and Lark Streets in Albany. You can keep up with show times and performers on their Facebook page.
You can also keep in-the-know by following Matt Kelly and Jaye McBride on Twitter.
