Lights Camera Jackson Winding Up for Summer

Local Film Critic has National Reach and a New York Emmy Award

Jackson Murphy (AKA Lights Camera Jackson)Most kids are finishing their school year and looking forward to a little down time.  Not Jackson Murphy. “I look forward to a lot more opportunities to review films and being on a lot more segments of Australian TV,” he said.

Murphy (A.K.A. Lights Camera Jackson), a 13-year-old Capital Region resident, has been doing movie reviews for kids on YNN-TV for the last six years. With a little help, he got the attention of the major networks and has appeared on “Today,” “The Early Show” and “Fox and Friends.” He became the youngest person to win a NY Emmy Award in 2010 and appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” twice. He also does reviews for Australia’s Seven Network. The lanky youth also enjoys meeting celebrities and has shared e-mails with Regis Philbin, who shares his birthday.

With a delivery that has sounded much older thank his years, Murphy has a few critics. Howard Stern knocked Murphy’s review of Inception and said it was insulting that the youth won an Emmy. The New York Post‘s Kyle Smith said that Murphy’s reviews were “overcoached” and “terrifying”. Murphy didn’t hesitate to respond. “I take criticism in stride,” he said.  “It’s actually an honor to get blasted by Howard Stern.”

Murphy has noticeably matured over the past six years. His voice is deepening and he’s losing his baby face. “My blog posts are also longer and I’m beginning to review movies for adults,” he added.

Murphy, an “A” student, seems to have a penchant for the arts and sports like his father, Dan Murphy, a long-time Capital Region sportscaster. He also enjoys cartooning, writing, playing tennis and trivia games, which he moderates during family holiday gatherings. He occasionally participates in charity events. In fact, he recently ran a trivia game activity at the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at Bruno Stadium.

Though Murphy will just be entering the eighth grade in the fall, he said that he aspires to being a game show or talk show host. “I really like talking to people,” he said.

Murphy couldn’t confirm his summer appearances and segued into a few sentences about two  upcoming films. He looks forward to seeing The Dark Knight Rises, but couldn’t say if he thought it would do as well as The Dark Knight. “It’s hard to get two movies like that,” he said.  He also said that Charlize Theron is outstanding in Snow White and the Huntsman and that the movie’s special effects are fantastic.
