Skating, Bobsledding and Globetrotters in Lake Placid for President’s Week

Winter Sports Despite the Lack of Snow

Bobsled and Skeleton World Championships. Photo Courtesy Whiteface.comEven though Lake Placid didn’t get much of a “winter” this year, there are still many winter sports being practiced in the Olympic Village.

This year, ORDA is once again hosting the Bobsled and Skeleton World Championships from February 13th – 26th at Mt. Van Hoevenburg. If you’ve always wanted to watch these two exciting sports live, this is your chance! So far Lake Placid has hosted 8 World Championships, the most recent in 2009 when Steve Holcomb and the United States’ sled “The Night Train” rocketed to the first men’s title since 1959. Also at that event, Shauna Rohbock earned silver, continuing success in bobsledding for the women’s team.

This event can’t be missed! Tickets for the World Championships can purchased by visiting www.Whiteface.com, calling 518-523-3330, or at the gate day of the event.

If sliding sports aren’t your thing, why not go skating on the historic Olympic Speed Skating Oval? From the 18th until the 26th, there will be extended holiday hours for public skating. The sessions are 1pm – 3pm, 4pm – 6pm, and 7pm – 9pm. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children and seniors. For more information, call 518-523-1655.

For one night only, the Harlem Globetrotters will bring their unique brand of athletics and comedy to the Olympic Center. At 7pm on Tuesday, February 21st, fans can watch the famous basketball team perform; the Tuesday night lineup is expected to feature (subject to change) Handles Franklin, Slick Willie, Airport Greenup and Firefly Fisher. Tickets are on sale, starting at $17, and are available at www.harlemglobetrotters.com, www.tickets.com, the Olympic Center box office, or by phone at 518-523-3330.

Have a great President’s Week!
