The Rainy Season in February: Burlington Blog

The Super Bowl, The Grammy’s, Ron Paul and Cinnamon Rolls

MadonnaWith all the rain this season I have found that mid-February lag to be amplified to the nth degree. Jet lag is usually something we can recover from in 24 hours, as long as you get a little sleep, but when February rolls around something switches and all we want to do is sleep! Luckily primetime television is sprinkled with awards shows, election news (or what I call “garble”), and, the biggest TV event of the year, the Super Bowl. This year’s halftime show tops my list as the best halftime show of my lifetime. In light of the gratitude and respect I hold for the strong female divas who defy the decades by breaking musical boundaries, Whitney Houston, may you rest in peace. Along with the rest of the world I was youtubing Whitney songs all day yesterday but the smash hit “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (circa 1987) remains my favorite. A woman and a legend, Whitney is remembered and loved in her music.

The Super Bowl was not only special to me because of the highly anticipated performance by Madonna, but also because I streamed it live using the wireless at a friend’s apartment. Little did I know this year was the first time the Super Bowl had been broadcasted live via web to cell phones, tablets and computers alike. The video quality did not disappoint, the connection was a little slow anyways, but I did have to re-watch the halftime show afterwards. As soon as Madonna busts out in those boots with such a spectacular set and unbeatable entourage I knew the show was going to be a knockout. In a time where high profile celebrities are exploited and as well as deified, Madonna has come a long way. Ron PaulThe title track from her 1998 album Ray Of Light shows exactly how far ahead of her time she was. Truly a testament to healthy lifestyle, positive attitude and hard work, Madonna is a role model for all women, whether we root for the Giants or the Patriots.

Back to the garble that none of us can escape with the onslaught of Republican campaigns across the nation. I treat politics much like I do football, it doesn’t matter who wins or loses; it’s more about how they play the game… yea, right. That being said, the less I hear about someone, the more I find myself interested in them. My father is an avid Ron Paul supporter, but this is no news to me. I’ve known about Ron Paul as long as I’ve been old enough to care about what happens in Washington. The movement towards Liberty in Vermont is a tradition that is strong and pure in this community. This Saturday, February 18, 2012, Vermonters who support Ron Paul will gather in the House Chamber of the State House in Montpelier. The Rally for Real Change has three main messages: Peace, Love and Liberty; and the event will feature an impressive lineup of speakers from noon until 3pm. And if you’re sick of all the garble? At least stop by around 1 o’clock for some live music and free information. You can find the event on Facebook, or click here to view a press release.

Cinnybuns. Photo by Chrissy LefavourTwo things remain on my mind, the lingering air of Valentine’s Day and the Grammy’s. If ever you find yourself in need of an amazing breakfast surprise for your sweetie, try this Cinnamon Roll Recipe I found at www.eatingwell.com. They came out amazing and I did the make ahead tip through step 6, then refrigerate overnight for fresh buns in the morning! I also used a sour cream frosting instead of the recommended glaze, yum. And for the Grammys? I say props to Bonnie Raitt for still rocking at the most important musical performance of the year alongside legends like the Beach Boys and Paul McCartney, can’t wait to see you at the Burlington Discover Jazz Fest this summer!

So through the wintry rain there are plenty of worthwhile distractions that will get us through the looming weeks of winter. Enjoy!
