Summer Vacations in Stowe, Vermont

Spas, Balloons and Great Food in the Green Mountains

The Stoweflake Resort and Spa. Photo Courtesy of StoweflakeKeeping in theme with the severe summer weather bringing days filled with rain to Vermont from time to time, I found myself indulging in yet another one of the regional hidden gems. The place is Stowe, VT; though it may look like a quaint mountain town with niches and snobs, it also claims award winning resorts and spas, gourmet cuisine, sophisticated taste and spectacular landscapes. The Stoweflake Resort and Spa offers a full range of spa services for deep discounts to locals in the spring time, a perfect time for me to fall in love with the resort. Just a short drive from my home in Montpelier, Stowe also offers a slew of unique and appetizing restaurants including Frida’s Taqueria & Grill, a trendy and exquisite taste of Mexico. Stowe is not only a ski town, but a top summertime destination in the Green Mountains.

Located nearly in the heart of downtown, The Stoweflake is perfect for a romantic weekend getaway or simply a spa day. Complete with massages, hot oil treatments, body wraps, mineral pool, sauna & steam rooms, the menu of indulgent options is overwhelming to a first time spa-goer like myself… Until I start to read the descriptions. You quickly realize you can’t go wrong. Spa day packages are available on a large scale and offer comprehensive options in fitness, feet, aroma therapy and more. All spa days grant you access to the sauna, steam room, outdoor pool & Aqua Solarium; a sunroom featuring two massaging waterfalls and a mineral pool. After a soak in this Hungarian style pool infused with imported salts, take a stroll in the meditative gardens or the labyrinth. Synchronicity in the body and mind is offered at The Stoweflake.

For a perfect summer vacation you’ll find golf, biking, hiking and swimming all on the grounds. This summer the 26th Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival will be hosted again by The Stoweflake. The resort runs rides seasonally, but the festival is a time the whole community comes together to take in the sights. Live entertainment, daily and nightly balloon launches, food vendors and a beer/wine garden make for a great excuse to spend time in Stowe. Whether it’s a rainy afternoon that demands a pedicure or a family adventure to a new destination, the Stoweflake calls lovers of nature, relaxation and exceptional quality to come and stay. Frida’s Taqueria & Grill. Photo Courtesy of Frida'sThe same week that I visited Stowe for a spa day including an Ayurvedic massage and pedicure, I found myself back in town for my best friend’s birthday party. We were meeting at Frida’s on Main Street in downtown Stowe. I had heard great reviews of this Mexican-style restaurant and people raved of the guacamole; “to die for!” The restaurant was bustling; it was loud, cozy and delicious! Any restaurant that serves home-cooked food in a comfortable and vibrant atmosphere is doing something right. The guacamole was great because it is served fresh, but more surprising to me were the tasty margaritas. A full list of variations and funky flavors keeps people drinking!

My main course of enchiladas filled with fresh vegetables and goat cheese was some of the best Mexican food I’ve tasted in Vermont. The business plan is lots of food, delightful service, complete with sights, sounds and tastes to please. Frida’s Taqueria & Grill is named for the innovative and stylish beyond her years Frida Kahlo and stands testament to the values of soul, art and community that are universal. Open seven days a week for dinner and serving lunch Mon-Fri and brunch on the weekends it may be hard to find an excuse not to go. Check it out at www.fridastaqueria.com.

With more fun ideas for summer in Vermont on the way, I can’t wait to get back to Stowe!
