Hibachi in the Heart of Lake George: Sushi Yoshi

Sushi Yoshi is a contemporary Japanese steakhouse, located along Route 9 in Lake George, a mile or two outside the main village. The restaurant offers a simplistic decor, an elaborate menu, generous portions and a friendly waitstaff, making it, overall, a pleasurable dining experience for anyone craving a hearty Japanese meal.

Their menu consists mainly of a variety of hibachi combinations and sushi rolls. Dinners come with a few built-in starters, like a tasty romaine salad with miso dressing and miso soup. I opted for a steak and salmon combination, which included well-seasoned, lean hibachi steak and salmon, and came with a side of noodles and vegetables. Dinner platters are plentiful, so be prepared.

Unfortunately, the sushi was slightly disappointing. The spicy lump crab roll was bland and unimpressive, seeming to insinuate that sushi may not be their forte here. But the hibachi was tasty, and the chef was terrific–personable, with a great sense of humor–he surprised me with a rubber duck that squirted out oil…well worth the price of admission.

Sushi Yoshi’s prices are a little on the steep side. Dinner for two will run you around $100, depending on what you order. Then again, it’s hibachi, not Denny’s. Appetizers usually range from $6.25 to $12.95.

You’ll have many choices for dinner–steak, lobster, scallops, salmon and chicken are just a few; you can choose two and combine them. Dinners run roughly around $24.00, but include a variety of extras, like fried noodles, fried rice and vegetables. Sushi Yoshi also has a small wine and beer list.
