Eating will always be one of America’s favorite pastimes, and eating together will always be cherished as time well spent together. However, if you’re not a gourmet chef or into scrounging the daily’s for coupons, eating out can add up to spending some serious cash. Here are some hot spots in Syracuse that you can get a delicious meal for under $10 a person.

Best Cheap Franks & Meats: Heid’s

Heid'sNationally recognized for its one-of-a-kind tasting franks and coneys, Heid’s Hot Dogs is a great place to eat. The old-school diner feel, family friendly atmosphere and attentive servers make this place top the cheap eats chart. In 2010 the Travel Channel’s Adam Richman of the hit TV show “Man V. Food” took a visit to Heid’s and confirmed that it served some of the best food in the country. There is something for everyone on Heid’s menu, which lists things such as franks, coneys, Philly cheese steak, Italian sausage, chili cheese or gravy fries and more. Best Mexican Cheap Eats: Boom Boom Mex Mex

For affordable authentic Mexican food, Boom Boom’s is the place to be. The owner of this eatery travels back and forth from Mexico to Syracuse each year to open the restaurant. That’s right, this place closes late in the fall and opens for business each spring. Although being open for business only half the year may be an inconvenience to customers, it only makes them want to come back more. The people of Syracuse mark their calendars for the day the restaurant opens again as their burritos, tacos and quesadilla’s are mouth-watering; The assembly-line style of putting the orders together is efficient, and being able to see your food being made is yet another perk. The inside of the restaurant is small, but very comfortable, and the cafeteria-style seating makes for an enjoyable laid-back dining experience. For an entrée and a fountain soda, you won’t spend more than $10 here. Best Cheap Diner Food: Mother’s Cupboard

Mother's CupboardThe best diner food in the city is sure to be found at Mother’s Cupboard. This tiny shack-like building located on James Street serves scrumptions too-big-for-the-plate pancakes, cheap but good coffee, and a world famous frittata. You’ll feel right at home seated at one of the cozy tables, watching the pancakes being flipped and being tended to by waitresses that referr to everyone as “hun.” The diner is known for their famous “Fritatta Challenge” which was also featured on the Travel Channel’s “Man V. Food.” If a person can finish the 6 pound frittata they receive a free tee-shirt and their name goes on the “wall of champions” (which is looking pretty empty). But even though that’s the only official challenge Mother’s Cupboard gives, finishing a regular plate can be difficult. One helping of anything is enough to feed at least two people, and the huge portions cost almost nothing at all. Best Cheap Vegan: Strong Hearts

For a unique experience while still keeping it under $10, Strong Hearts Vegan Café is definitely worth trying. Vegan and vegetarian food is often more expensive than other options such as the classic American cheeseburger. Strong Hearts offers a wide variety of affordable vegan food that easily caters to the omnivore’s pallet. Vegan versions of the “B.L.T.”, “chicken” salad sandwich, and the classic Reuben sandwich are all favorites on the menu. For someone who is not looking to step too far off of the path, there are choices like a fresh and delicious citrus salad, and a toasted peanut butter, banana and jelly sandwich that just can’t be duplicated. In addition to the many meal options, Strong Hearts is especially well known for their creamy, delectable “milk” shakes. The flavors are endless and vary from simple strawberry to s’mores. Best Cheap Eats Pizza: Dorian’s Pizza & Deli

For the night owls who crave traditional food done right, Dorian’s Pizza & Deli is the perfect spot. Things like Cajun fries with cheese are made with a 100% homemade blend of spices, and are priced at around $3. Other choices more fit for a meal like burgers, salads, and wraps range from $4 to $8. What’s really special about Dorian’s is the selection of foods and length of the menu. It has something for everyone and houses American, Greek, Italian, and Middle Eastern food all under one roof, for under $10. If you’re not in the mood to split a pizza with five of your buddies for just around $5 per-person, you can always choose from one of the twelve Greek God sandwiches, mountainous burgers grilled to perfection, or opt for a vegetarian gyro with Boca meat. Dining at Dorian’s is casual, and it’s known for its popularity among the college crowd. However, families and couples are often seen stopping in for a slice after a show at the Westcott Theater, or picking up a pie to take home to the dinner table.
