Washington County, NY: A Rich Landscape of Growers, Producers and Artisans

washington county nyThe growers and producers of Washington County create the landscape described by some as the Tuscany of New York with their crops, barns, silos and animals. Beyond the greens, cows and corn is an emergence of Made in Washington County products, with everything from mustard to hand crafted jewelry.

Value added agricultural goods include a variety of delicious foodstuffs produced at the Battenkill Kitchen, a commercial kitchen in Salem at the Historic Courthouse. These tasty products include Bald Mountain Garlic Farm (salsas & roasted nuts), Mrs. B’s Bakery (specialty cookies), Farm House Gourmet (Sweet & Savory Butters), Hebron Hills Farm Products (Jailhouse Mustard), Pa’s Pistol (Hickory Sauce). If you’re a fan of pickles, award winning Puckers Gourmet pickles and Kim chi produced in Greenwich are a must find for you.

Say cheese! Washington County has a larger concentration of artisan and farmstead cheese makers than anywhere else in New England—don’t miss them during their tour in September. Partnering with some of the sheep and goat milk producers are local soap makers, including Log Cabin Farm Soap and Pure N’ Simple who make natural soaps and other products sure to keep you beautiful.

Liquid gold pure maple syrup is a plenty in Washington County; this past March was sapping season and the Washington County Maple Producers filled the air with the aroma of maple as they opened their sugar shacks to the public—find producers at county farmers’ markets or online and check out the sugar shack at the Washington County Fair in August.

Adorn yourself with artisan jewelry from producers like Tim Shea (hand forged silver and gold classic contemporary jewelry), Spinning Glass Studio (handmade lampwork beads and jewelry), Ed Levin (designer of handcrafted jewelry in silver, gold, platinum and precious stones), Over the Moon Beads and Gifts (creative original beaded jewelry), Stephen LeBlanc – creations are inspired by nature. These Washington County artisans offer distinctive and locally made baubles perfect for you or that someone special.

 

Wrap yourself in comforting warmth with fiber produced clothing from sheep, llamas, alpacas and angora. If you are a knitter, spinner or fiber fan, look for skeins produced by Battenkill Fibers Carding and Spinning Mill in Greenwich. They produce skeins (a length of thread or yarn wound in a loose long coil) made from local fiber farms in vibrant colors reminiscent of Washington County’s landscape. Many producers offer items for sale at their farm and don’t miss the Fiber Festival in September.

Washington County is full of great shops that offer a variety of interesting and unique gift items, household goods, clothing, jewelry, and tasty treats that are Made in Washington County. Look for these goods at your area farmers’ market or take a drive into Washington County and see the landscape for yourself—don’t forget to bring a picnic basket.
