Ya like Zombies? Then the Zombie Prom at Bettie’s Cupcakes in Saratoga is the Place to Be
Looking for something exciting to do for Halloween this year? Then you’re in for a treat as one of the most unique events on the block is the Zombie Prom at Bettie’s Cupcakes in Saratoga Springs. On October 22nd from 7pm to 10pm, an abundance of cupcakes, dancing, singing, and games will all take on the Halloween theme. You can RSVP for the event via the Bettie’s Cupcakes Facebook page, and costumes are encouraged.
Every October, Bettie breaks out an original line of Spooky Cupcakes for Halloween. These creepy treats are available by pre-order for holiday parties and of course at the Zombie Prom. This year, there’s a wide array of tasty orange and yellow candy-corn and gummy-topped treats to choose from, along with a zombie brain cake, which is covered in mud-pie frosting and crawling with gummy tarantulas. But the cupcakes are the eeriest of all, complete with bloodshot eyeballs, bleeding fang marks, loose teeth, puffy frosting ghosts, and a green hand emerging from orange sludge.
In addition to the shop’s signature treats, there will be a host of great Halloween events going on at the Zombie Prom. The highlight is, of course, the choosing of the Prom King and Queen. And since this is a Zombie Prom, the King and Queen will be zombies as well. Guests dressed as zombies can enter the contest, and the judging will be based on the most ghoulish costume. The incentive? Winners get free cupcakes for a year. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t win, because you’ll have another chance for victory with ticket giveaways to the Cake Boss show featuring celebrity baker Buddy Valastro (from TLC’s “Cake Boss”) at Proctors in Schenectady on November 4th.
Guests will also get the chance to participate in one of the most famous zombie dances of all time. Three local Zumba instructors will be leading a group dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” All guests are encouraged to learn the dance and perform it during the Prom. In addition, Halloween themed karaoke will also be going on throughout the night.
Bettie’s Cupcakes is comprised of a 1950s style cupcakery at 454 Broadway in Saratoga Springs and a pastel pink double-decker bus. Yes, Bettie has a bus that drives around selling cupcakes from the window from 11am to 8pm daily. The double-decker is nicknamed DeeDee and comes complete with a vintage second floor cafe. Holding 27 people comfortably, the cafe can be rented out for private parties. Started almost a year ago in November 2009, Bettie’s Cupcakes is owned and operated by Lorraine Murphy. Murphy favors cupcakes as her baked good of choice because of their capacity for individualization; customers can choose their own flavor and style in each perfect size treat.
Going along with her love of the 1950s, Murphy also owns Pinup Makeovers. Pinup makeovers by First Impressions Photography uses costumes, hair, and makeup tricks to transform normal girls into pinup worthy 1950s style glamazons. A retro hour makeup session with celebrity makeup artist Genn Shaughnessy is followed by an hour photo session with Lorraine Murphy herself.
